AWARDS :Hasan Abdullah Yabroudi Student Paper Award 2008In order to expand and enhance understanding of the Middle East, the Middle Eastern Studies Program at Syracuse University announces the launching of an essay contest for undergraduate and graduate students. The Hasan Abdullah Yabroudi Prize will be awarded annually to the best two essays dealing with any aspect of the Middle East written by one undergraduate and one graduate student enrolled at Syracuse University. The authors of the winning papers will be presented with an award of $500 and a certificate. The entries, which can originate as course papers, will be evaluated by a faculty committee on the basis of originality of research and conceptualization, cogency of argument and clarity of writing. The essays must not exceed 7500 words (including bibliography) and must have been produced between May 13, 2007 and May 14, 2008. Essays can be nominated by the faculty or by students (with a letter of support from a faculty member). Submission deadline is May 15, 2008. 2008 Graduate Student Summer Research GrantsMiddle Eastern Studies Program Graduate Student Summer Research Grants The Middle Eastern Studies Program (MESP) will grant awards (up to $3,000) to graduate students to support field research for thesis or doctoral research projects in the Middle East in the summer of 2008. The purpose of the award is to provide students the opportunity to gather preliminary data; establish contacts with local scholars, associations, institutions, and informants; map topics; and increase the competitiveness of future funding proposals. The proposals will be evaluated on the basis of (a) originality and significance of the proposed research, (b) organization and clarity of the proposal, (c) appropriateness and feasibility of the research plan in relation to the student's background and qualifications, and (d) cost effectiveness. While applicants can submit a proposal related to any topic that deals with the region they should pay particular attention to what issues, problems or needs the project addresses and why they are of compelling significance.
